Behind the Scenes: Creating My Perfumery Guide
When I first set out to write An Introduction to Creating Your Own Perfume, I wasn’t just compiling a how-to guide—I was distilling years of experience, research, and hands-on formulation into something accessible for independent perfumers.
This 48-page resource is the book I wish I had when I started. It goes beyond the basics, offering insights into natural and synthetic materials, formulation techniques, regulatory considerations, and even the business side of fragrance development. But more than that, I wanted to create a visual and structured approach to perfumery—one that helps demystify the process and encourages creativity.
Why This Book is Different
Most perfumery books focus either on the artistic aspect or the chemistry behind fragrance. This guide bridges the gap, making perfumery approachable without oversimplifying it. I designed two fragrance wheels—one for traditional categories and another for synthetic materials—to help perfumers navigate the complexity of scent design. There are also tables of top, middle, and base notes that break down materials in a way that’s both practical and inspiring.
And because perfumery isn’t just about blending scents, I included sections on maceration, filtration, pricing, packaging, and even marketing a fragrance. Whether someone is experimenting for personal enjoyment or looking to start their own line, this guide serves as a foundation for both the craft and the business of perfume-making.
The Creative Process
Writing and illustrating this book was a challenge in itself. Every diagram, fragrance wheel, and table was custom-designed to make complex concepts easier to grasp. I spent months refining the content, ensuring that it wasn’t just informative but actually useful—something perfumers could reference again and again.
What’s Next?
I’m excited to finally share this project with the world. For those who have always wanted to create their own fragrances but didn’t know where to start—or for perfumers looking to refine their approach—this guide is now available as a digital download.
