Fragrance Story
“…for those closest to my heart, multiplied and diffused throughout the world.”
Pope John XXIII (1881 – 1963)
This quote was sampled twice by the Australian electronica band Single Gun Theory: first in the opening track “Closest To My Heart” on Millions, Like Stars in My Hands, The Daggers in My Heart Wage War (1991), and later in full in the closing track “Still Closest To My Heart” on Flow, River of My Soul (1994). The band’s use of this recurring quote ties the two albums together thematically.
I was first introduced to Single Gun Theory through the video for their song “From a Million Miles.” I was instantly enamored with their blend of anti-war sentiment, spirituality, and world music. The opening track “Transmission” on their 1994 album samples this quote from Sharon A. Klinger: “I give you this for your consideration. The most important factor in any metaphysical exercise is the release of belief systems, boundaries, and fears. All limitations are self-imposed.” This quote has served as a mantra for many of my life choices—including, “I’ll just make my own perfume. How hard can it be?”
Though I am no longer Catholic – (sorry, Grandma) – I find the words of Pope John XXIII to be a beautiful sentiment whenever I address cherished friends near and far. I launched my brand online in December 2015, but I didn’t start selling directly to the public until February 2016. Over the years, I have had the immense pleasure of making new friends with customers, other perfumers, and even those who inspired my fragrances. As I begin a new chapter in my business, I can think of no better way to mark the occasion than by sharing one last fragrance with those closest to my heart.
This fragrance is the culmination of my journey as a self-taught perfumer, from my first oil-based fragrances composed entirely of botanical materials; to a modern approach that blends naturals and synthetics in ethanol; then water; and now, full circle, back to ethanol. This eau de parfum weaves together the melodies and harmonies of eleven different scent categories in my fragrance wheel, capturing what I’m best known for: creating ethereal and complex fragrances.
